Ingredient Focus: Hyaluronic Acid

There's a lot of information our there about skincare and choosing what works for you and your skin can sometimes be a bit daunting. So we're here to simplify the process by giving you all the information about skincare actives so you can make the best choices for your skin on your gentle aging journey.

Ingredient Focus: Hyaluronic Acid

I'm sure you've heard of Hyaluronic Acid, it has become something of a buzzword in the skincare industry and with good reason.

What is Hyaluronic Acid?

According to Healthline, "Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan found throughout the body’s connective tissue. Glycosaminoglycans are simply long unbranched carbohydrates, or sugars, called polysaccharides."
Hyaluronic Acid is a huge part of that gives your skin structure while providing lubrication and hydration. The levels of Hyaluronic Acid in our skin decreases as we grow older because production of Hyaluronic Acid slows down and can be exacerbated by environmental stressors and sun exposure.

What does Hyaluronic Acid do and why should we choose it?

Hydration:

Hyaluronic Acid can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water. I'm sure you've heard that before, but it isn't just that that makes it so impressive, it is that it is a humectant which is a fancy way of saying that it it can draw water to the surface of your skin. When used correctly, Hyaluronic Acid can hydrate, moisturise and create a super dewy glow. And, as we get older, loss of hydration and the subsequent plump and firmness of our skin, this is a nice and easy way to restore some of what's lost. Use Hyaluronic Acid on damp skin, this means that the water Hyaluronic Acid is looking for is already on your skin and can be easily absorbed.

Lipid Barrier:

This is one of my favourite things about Hyaluronic Acid. Your lipid barrier is a protective layer of your epidermis, the outer layer, which is made up of lipids which include ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids. The lipid barrier helps your skin maintain itself and the sensitive skin beneath and protects against damage which includes pollution, environmental stressors and the sun. Hyaluronic Acid helps bolster the lipid barrier, strengthening and helping maintain it so that it has improved resilience. When skin is more resilient, plumper and firmer, wrinkles and fine lines are less apparent.

Skin Tone:

Skin tone is one of the focusses of Hyaluronic Acid. When skin is plumper and firmer, skin is more uniform in texture which not only means that skin is smoother, but it also means that skin is more radiant. When paired with products that target hyperpigmentation, blemishes, dark marks and melasma, it can be a powerful combination and contributes to more radiant complexion and overall improve silkiness.
